Brexit is a test of maturity of European leaders and self-esteem of the European Union. Future generations will see either our excuses and accusations of a member that democratically decided to make its own choice or a self-confident and realistic approach of 27 countries searching for reform and new direction.
The idea of political union is failing. Let us see the EU as a neighborhood; Sovereign households that understand the essential need for cooperation and common values. They do not rule over each other, they do not patronize. Instead they celebrate diversity and voluntarily seek synergies.
We must deal with Great Britain in a dignified manner. Negotiations need to start with respect on both sides. Lives of EU citizens and enormous amounts of trade are at stake. Distrust towards the EU among its citizens will fade once a good deal has been signed.
